We built this ten-day journey to pair Tokyo's art, culture, and design with the shrines, waterfalls, and volcanic scenery of the wider Kanto region. A private vehicle and dedicated guide take you through nearly every day of sightseeing, with a sleek new express train bringing you back to Tokyo from Tochigi midway through the journey. We start in the capital, taking in its oldest temple and one of its most immersive digital art experiences, then head north to Nikko, where the ornately carved Tōshō-gū Shrine sits among towering cedars, waterfalls, lakes, and marshland. From there we continue through the Edo-themed world of Kinugawa, the Great Buddha and seaside atmosphere of Kamakura and Enoshima, and the volcanic valleys and lakes of Hakone, before returning to Tokyo for one last look at its design scene and skyline. Shrines and mountains, lakes and coast, all within easy reach of the capital.

Day 1 - Tokyo
Open Tokyo among its cultural landmarks. Step into the Sumida Hokusai Museum and trace the life of the artist behind the Great Wave, the most recognizable image in all of Japanese art. Then walk the lantern-lit Nakamise through the crowds — past stalls of grilled snacks and paper fans — into Sensō-ji Temple, the oldest in the city. Wander the wide, tree-lined paths of Ueno Park, home to some of Japan's great museums and, in spring, rows of cherry blossoms. After dark, board a yakatabune — slip off your shoes, settle onto the tatami, and eat as the lit-up city slides past on the black water.

Day 2 - Tokyo
Start at the Imperial Palace, walking its broad stone moats and pine-lined gravel paths — an island of calm the emperor's family still calls home. Cross into Nihonbashi, standing on the bridge from which every distance in old Japan was once measured, then browse Ginza block by block. In the late afternoon, step into teamLab Borderless, where the artworks have no frames and no fixed rooms — walk through light and color that spill across the floor and shift in response to your presence. Linger among the shifting light until the artworks and your reflection blur together.

Day 3 - Nikko
Head north out of Tokyo today. First, wander Ashikaga Flower Park, walking beneath long, hanging curtains of wisteria in spring, or through one of Japan's largest illuminations after dark in the colder months. Then drive on toward Nikko and descend into the Oya History Museum — step down into a vast former stone quarry, its cool, echoing chambers cut deep underground, the temperature dropping as you go and the carved rock walls rising far overhead, so striking they're often used as a backdrop for films, music videos, and photo shoots.

Give the day over to Nikko's mountain scenery. Stand at the foot of Kegon Falls and feel the cool rise off the water as it drops nearly 100 meters in a single plunge, the spray drifting up and catching the light. Move on to Lake Chuzenji, a deep, still lake at the foot of the sacred Mount Nantai, and take in the wide water ringed by forested slopes. Then follow the boardwalks of Senjogahara Marshland, level and open, winding out across grass and stream with the mountains ranged all around.

Slow right down in Kamakura today, a seaside town where temples tuck into wooded coastal hills. Come face to face with the Great Buddha of Kōtoku-in Temple — a great bronze figure seated calmly in the open air, so large you tip your head back to meet its gaze. Then cross the short causeway to Enoshima, climbing the shop-lined lanes and shrine steps as sea views open at every turn, pausing for lunch somewhere along the way with the coast in sight. Ride up the Sea Candle lighthouse and look out over the bay, the coastline and, on a clear day, Mount Fuji ranged along the horizon.

Turn to the mountains of Hakone today. Wander the Hakone Open-Air Museum, coming upon sculptures by major artists set out across lawns and hillsides against the mountain backdrop, and step into its pavilion devoted to Picasso. Then ride the Hakone Ropeway high over Ōwakudani, a volcanic valley where sulfur vents steam and hiss below — step off at the top to buy a black egg cooked in the hot springs, said to add years to your life, and on a clear day, catch Mount Fuji floating on the horizon beyond the drifting steam.

Day 9 - Hakone
Spend the day on and around Lake Ashi. Board a sightseeing cruise and glide across the water, forested hills rising on every side, toward the red torii gate of Hakone Shrine standing right at the shoreline. Step ashore and climb the shrine's approach on foot — worn stone steps rising between towering old cedars, the crowds thinning with every step — up to the halls above, with Mount Fuji beyond the lake on a clear day.

Day 10 - Tokyo
Return to Tokyo from Hakone for a final day of design and skyline. Step into 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, a concrete gallery half-buried underground by architect Tadao Ando and founded by the fashion designer Issey Miyake — a place devoted not to paintings but to design itself, from clothing and everyday objects to the ideas behind them, its low galleries lit softly from above. Then end the journey on the open-air deck of Shibuya Sky, 230 meters up: step to the glass edge and look straight down at the famous scramble crossing, the whole city stretching out around you as the lights come on one by one.
