What You’ll Discover
We designed this one-day journey to reach Nikko, a UNESCO World Heritage shrine town tucked in the mountains north of Tokyo, and back in a single day — a round trip that would mean multiple train transfers and local buses on public transport, but is a single seamless drive in a chartered vehicle. With an English-speaking guide for up to 10 hours, we take you across the vermilion Shinkyo Bridge and into Nikko Tosho-gu, the lavishly carved mausoleum built by his successors to enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu, the warlord whose victory ended a century of civil war and ushered in over 250 years of peace across Japan, with lunch in the surrounding countryside along the way. It's a day trip built for travelers who want Japan's most celebrated shrine complex without an overnight stay.

Reachable only by chartered vehicle in a single day — public transit means multiple transfers each way, this is one seamless drive there and back.
Built by his successors to honor the warlord who ended a century of civil war and whose dynasty ruled Japan for 250 years — every surface of his shrine covered in over 5,000 carvings.
Three UNESCO World Heritage sites in one afternoon — the famous Tosho-gu, the overlooked gilded Buddhas of Rinno-ji, and the quiet mountain shrine most visitors walk past.
600 meters higher, two hours from Tokyo, and a completely different kind of air — mountain cedar and mist where the city noise cannot follow.

Rinno-ji Temple
Step into the Sanbutsudo Hall of Rinno-ji Temple, part of Nikko's UNESCO World Heritage area, and stand before three gilded Buddhist statues each some 7.5 meters tall — a sight that stops most visitors in their tracks, though Rinno-ji is often overshadowed by Tosho-gu next door.

Nikko Tosho-gu Shrine
Walk beneath the gates of Nikko Tosho-gu, the lavishly carved and gilded mausoleum built by his successors to enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu — the warlord whose victory ended a century of civil war and brought over 250 years of peace to Japan. Every other Japanese shrine is restrained and austere, but Tosho-gu is the opposite, its surfaces covered in over 5,000 carvings honoring the man behind that peace. Look out for the famous three wise monkeys and the sleeping cat.
