What You’ll Discover

Where two mountain rivers meet in the hills of Kirishima, there was once a river crossing, and the inn that grew up beside it has stood here since 1879. Its main house dates to the early twentieth century and still carries that period's quiet grace, but ORIHASHI is less one building than a small hamlet: twelve detached cottages spread across a garden of some thirty thousand square meters, seven of them facing the river and five the mountain. From central Kagoshima, a private car brings you here in a short ride into the Kirishima hills. Every cottage has an open-air bath of its own, fed by free-flowing hot-spring water, with an indoor bath and a cold plunge besides. A few have a character all their own — one with a bath set for watching the stars, another with its own sauna. Beyond the cottages, the large outdoor bath has a sauna too, and in the annex is an old bath long said to soothe and heal, from a gentle bicarbonate spring. Dinner is kaiseki drawn from the mountains and the sea, on a menu that changes with the month; for those who want it, a salt-free, sugar-free menu is also prepared with doctors and dietitians. By day, the innkeeper himself leads guests on foot up into the Kirishima hills, if you care to climb. This is a one-night stay built around a private open-air bath by the river — arrive, bathe, dine, and let the Kirishima hills take care of the rest.

Rest
Soak once more before bed, then let the cottage fall quiet, the river sounding in the dark and no neighboring doors nearby. In a hamlet of only twelve cottages, the night is private.
