What You’ll Discover

The Yokohama Museum of Art opened in 1989 to a design by Kenzo Tange. It was built as the cultural anchor of Minato Mirai, the waterfront district Yokohama was developing at the time, and the architecture is the reason to hold an event here. The room you use is the Grand Gallery, the central atrium. It is symmetrical, very tall, and lit from above, and it holds up to 200 standing. There is enough floor for people to move around rather than stand in one clump. Attached to it is the Portico, the covered walkway that leads into the building. It is outdoors without being exposed, which makes it a good place for drinks on arrival and a safe one if the weather turns. Because this is a functioning museum, the current exhibition can be opened privately for your guests, without the queues. Getting there is easy. Three to five minutes on foot from Minatomirai Station, about ten from Sakuragicho, roughly half an hour from Haneda. The venue runs 09:00 to 21:00. Catering, multilingual staff, halal and allergy menus and barrier-free access are all in place. It suits a reception or a launch better than a formal seated dinner. The building rewards people walking around in it.
