What You’ll Discover

We designed this one-day journey to pair the mountain shrine of Kibune with the historic canal town of Omi-hachiman, two contrasting escapes just beyond Kyoto — and rarely linked by public transit, which would mean multiple train transfers each way. With a private van and English-speaking guide for up to 9 hours, we take you into the cool cedar forests of Kibune-jinja Shrine, then out to Omi-hachiman for an Omi-gyu beef lunch and a cable car ride up Mount Hachiman above its historic canal district. It's a quieter, greener alternative to Kyoto's busiest sights, more ground covered in a day than public transport allows.

Two destinations nearly 90 minutes apart by car — reaching both by public transit means multiple transfers. A chartered vehicle covers both in one smooth day.

A mountain shrine deep in cedar forest, barely touched by international tourism — three sacred sites linked to water blessings and matchmaking.

Lunch on Omi-gyu, a wagyu variety older and rarer than Kobe beef, in a historic canal town most Kyoto visitors never reach.

A cable car ride above a canal town of willow trees and Edo-era merchant houses — a view almost no visitor gets to see.

Kibune-jinja Shrine
Climb through Kibune-jinja Shrine's three sacred sites — the Hongu main shrine, Yuinoyashiro, and the Okunomiya inner shrine — deep in a mountain forest long linked to matchmaking and water blessings. Try the shrine's water fortune slips, which reveal their message only when floated on the spring — one of Japan's more quietly memorable rituals.

Omi-gyu Lunch in Shiga
Sit down to lunch in the canal town of Omi-hachiman, featuring Omi-gyu, a wagyu variety older and rarer than Kobe beef — close enough to the source that this is genuinely one of the best midday stops in the region.

Mount Hachiman Cable Car
Ride the cable car up Mount Hachiman, 272 meters above the town, past the stone ruins of a 16th-century castle. From the summit, look south over the whole of Omi-hachiman, northeast toward Lake Nishinoko and the waterside scenery between the city and Lake Biwa, and from the north viewpoint, all the way to Lake Biwa and the Hira mountains beyond.
