We created this twelve-day journey to pair the culture of Tokyo with the mountainous heart of central Japan. We begin in the capital, with its oldest temple and its most celebrated art, then take you through the coastal towns of Kamakura and Atami toward Lake Kawaguchi, where Mount Fuji rises across the water on clear days. From there we climb into the mountains, to Matsumoto and its national-treasure castle, the temples and sake of Nagano, and the resort greenery of Karuizawa, before returning to Tokyo for a final look at the city's contemporary art and skyline. We have balanced the famous sights with quieter corners, and city culture with mountain air, because we think the contrast is what makes this region worth the time.
