What You’ll Discover
We designed this two-day journey to reach the roots of Japanese spirituality in its original capitals, Nara and Uji, taking in 5 UNESCO World Heritage Sites along the way. We bring you to some of the country's oldest temples — from Hōryū-ji and Yakushi-ji to the Great Buddha of Tōdai-ji and the free-roaming deer of Nara Park — and on to Uji, home to the refined tea culture and the World Heritage Phoenix Hall of Byōdō-in. With transport and an overnight stay arranged, you move between ancient wooden halls and matcha-scented streets at your own pace.
Stand beneath a bronze Great Buddha some 15 meters tall at Tōdai-ji Temple, inside one of the largest wooden buildings in the world.
Walk among more than 1,000 sacred deer in Nara Park, roaming completely free — hold out a cracker and a few will bow their heads before taking one.
See the Phoenix Hall of Byōdō-in Temple in Uji, the temple pictured on Japan's 10-yen coin, then sample matcha at the source of Japanese tea.
